DOWNTOWN RICHMOND—ONLY BAY AREA CONTENDER FOR PRESTIGIOUS PARTNERS IN PRESERVATION MAIN STREETS CAMPAIGN—TO HOST OPEN HOUSE EVENT ON OCTOBER 7
Richmond, CA — In the first ten days of the 2017 Partners in Preservation: Main Streets campaign began, over 150,000 votes have been cast. Richmond Main Street Initiative (RMSI) is encouraging everyone in Richmond and the entire Bay Area to show their support for community-based historic preservation and local businesses by voting for the Revive the Market Marquee project.
“It was such an honor to be invited to apply and we are even more honored that our project is one of the 25 finalists,” says Amanda Elliott, Executive Director.
Additionally, Downtown Richmond is the only Bay Area community vying for this impactful preservation, placemaking, and small business supporting award. Sites with the most votes at the end of the voting period will be awarded grants, until the full $2 million is distributed.
The public is invited and encouraged to cast five votes daily to the main street project(s) via www.VoteYourMainStreet.org. The campaign runs through October 31.
Downtown Richmond’s Revive the Market Marquee project proposes to restore and reinvigorate the historic Market Square Mall façade. The new marquee and sign at this 1924 historic building, located at 322 Harbour Way, will light up Downtown Richmond along one of its most visible intersections and widely-traveled thoroughfares. During the 1940s, the building was home to Breuners furniture store and was a vital part of Richmond’s vibrant Downtown. Later renovations added individual units which are currently occupied by locally-owned retail and professional service businesses, as well as several community- and faith-based organizations.
The restoration of the marquee will literally light up the street, making significant positive impacts in the overall look of the building, furthering the district’s mission to preserve its historic landmarks, and supporting local small businesses.
On Saturday, October 7, from 11am – 3pm, RMSI will host a special pop-up Revive the Market Marquee Open House event at the Market Square Mall as part of nationwide Partners in Preservation: Main Streets Open House Weekend activities, highlighting the importance of preservation efforts and activating the community’s hometown pride. The entire Bay Area community is invited to come Downtown Richmond to meet-up, relive good memories, meet the mall’s new businesses (4 have opened in the past year), and #VoteRichmond. Activities will also include music by DJ Architect, remarks from local officials (12pm), a History Hike (1pm), voting stations, giveaways and swag, door prizes, and more.
