THURSDAY JULY 18, 2019 at 6:30PM THE CITY OF RICHMOND’S PLANNING COMMISSION WILL HAVE A HEARING ON PLN19-191 ORDINANCE PROHIBITING STORAGE OF COAL AND PETROLEUM COKE
We understand the community’s concerns about climate change and the desire to reduce the use of fossil fuels, and that the economy is transitioning away from fossil fuels which will occur over many years. However, the prohibition of these products will put Levin Richmond Terminal out of business and will not address either of those concerns.

Stopping coal and petcoke shipments in Richmond will only shift the material to other locations, such as Pittsburg and Stockton. Moving the material longer distances will only increase carbon emissions, not reduce them.
We should not penalize a small family-owned business, that has been in Richmond for 37 years, supports the community, and employs 50 union workers.
The California Air Resources Board and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District are in the process of studying air pollutants in the community, including coal and petcoke dust.
Let’s hear the evidence before we act. Put off consideration of the ordinance until the facts are in. It’s only fair to Levin, the community and to the employees.
The Council of Industries has sent the following letter to the Planning Commission and the City Council requesting that this ordinance be put on hold.
